About the gallery
The 2008 gallery displayed a grid of thumbnails, each of which opened a larger image in a new window. That viewer no longer works, but the thumbnails recovered from the archived page are kept below, and a captioned set of the same subjects can be seen on Images of Dublin, where each picture links to a full-size version.
The collection spans more than a century of the city’s life. It includes the burning of the Custom House in 1921, Leinster House (now the seat of Dáil Éireann) decorated for a visit by King George V, the Four Courts in the 1950s, Nelson’s Pillar on O’Connell Street, which was destroyed by an explosion in 1966, and the excavations at Wood Quay, where remains of Viking and medieval Dublin were uncovered in the 1970s. Other views show St Stephen’s Green and the Shelbourne Hotel, the Ha’penny Bridge, the Mansion House, Drimnagh Castle and the interior of the Brazen Head, which is often described as Dublin’s oldest pub.
More pictures of old Dublin
The books on the site describe many of the same places in words. Picturesque Dublin Old and New has chapters on Dublin Castle, Stephen’s Green and the quays, and D.A. Chart’s The Story of Dublin describes the city district by district. An earlier album of pictures of Dublin landmarks from the 2007 version of the site is also preserved.
The recovered 2008 gallery follows below.
