Where to find the books now
The 2008 version of this page carried little more than a heading and a note that the archive could be searched by keyword. The books themselves are still on the site. The Book list gathers the full-length texts, including general histories of Ireland such as The Story of Ireland by Emily Lawless and An Illustrated History of Ireland from AD 400 to 1800 by Mary Frances Cusack, alongside James Joyce’s Dubliners and Ulysses.
Most of the archive is made up of books about Dublin itself, divided into chapters so that each part can be read on its own page. Among the largest collections are F. Elrington Ball’s History of County Dublin, Jonah Barrington’s Personal Sketches and Recollections, An Irishman’s Diary on the Neighbourhood of Dublin, D.A. Chart’s The Story of Dublin and C.T. M’Cready’s Dublin Street Names, Dated and Explained. The all chapters page groups every chapter by the book it comes from.
Searching the archive
The keyword search mentioned in the original text belonged to the 2008 site and no longer runs. On the current site, the search button in the bottom right corner of every page looks up chapter titles and summaries. For questions that cut across several books, the Chronology of Dublin history is a useful starting point, as it arranges events by date and links to related material.
